Ask anybody in the business of crafting messages and they will tell you why someone who can make a compelling press/billboard piece can create advertising in any medium. It’s simple logic really, you get one frame and a tiny attention span to reach someone’s brain. And if you know how to consistently perform this kind of sorcery you are a certified genius.
One such genius is Art Director/Designer Dave Dye. Dave Dye along with his partner, Sean Doyle were a legendary Writer / Art team who worked closely for over 20 years. More on Sean Doyle in another post. Together they were the best print/poster creative team in the UK right through the 90s and a good part of the early 2000s. Their body of work is a tiring list of brands that includes Adidas, American Airlines, Mercedes, The Economist, Merrydown, Adnams Beer, VW, London Underground, Sony, Bentley, and Howies – Just to name a few.
As people who often geek out on advertising craft, we found a goldmine of content in Stuff From The Loft – An archive single handedly built by Dave Dye himself. It turns out, heroes can have heroes too. If you are an advertising student, a professional, or someone who just loves the process of creating advertising, it’s a great way to lose a weekend reading about the likes of Tom McElligot, Gerry Graf, Ben Priest, Tony Davidson. Each, a legend in their own right with a completely different approach to finding new ways of reaching people.
Here’s a quick look at some of Mr. Dye’s work.
